When you are on the roads this time of the year, take a look at the car beside you. The driver in specific. If it is not them, it is you.

If there is an accident there is more than a 50-50 chance that the driver is under the influence.

That is alarming. Scary alarming.

Love the message board signs you see along I 95  done by the Maine DOT, and hats off for whomever is responsible for the creativity in the messages.

But, Are they effective?

Most of them bring a smile your face as you are driving just under 80 in a 70 miles an hour zone, but again are they working?

Maybe we need signs like that everywhere, and not just on the interstate, because a national study by U.S. Highway Safety regulators says more than half the people injured or killed in traffic crashes had one or more drugs, or alcohol in their bloodstreams.

Let that sink in, as we approach Christmas and New Years.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released the data earlier this week that said marijuana is the most prevalent followed by alcohol

That’s not good news. More than half the accidents involve drivers that shouldn’t be driving.

The study was released as NHTSA began its annual holiday season campaign against impaired driving.

Making a plan for a safe, sober ride home is critical to saving lives this holiday season

Let us all be on board for that.

And if you have ever thought you’d like to be the one writing those messages for Maine DOT, hey go for it.
