Help Seniors In Maine Feed Their Pets Through The Winter

We all know that this coming winter is going to be a tough one for many of our friends and neighbors across the state. Maine's senior citizens are especially at risk this season, as many live on fixed incomes and are already feeling the effects of social isolation and the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

For many seniors, their furry friends are an important part of daily life. They provide older folks with companionship, a sense of purpose and some much needed physical affection--at a time where physical affection is being discouraged due to the high risk of transmitting the virus.

But sometimes the choice comes down to paying for things like grocery, heating oil and prescriptions vs. food for their pets. That's why each year members of the Bangor Police Department, Shaws grocery stores and the Eastern Area Agency on Aging's  Furry Friends Food Bank get together to collect pet food to give to aging folks in the area the means to take care of their beloved buddies.

This year, the Pet Food Drive will be taking place Saturday November 14th from 10AM-2PM at Shaws on Main Street in Bangor.

Anyone who is able to donate pet food or treats is encouraged to stop by and drop some off. Donations will be collected on site by Furry Friend Food Bank staff.

Sgt. Wade Betters of the Bangor Police Department says if you do plan to stop by to donate, they encourage you to wear a mask.

"This event helps many seniors who sometimes have to choose between buying groceries, or food for their pets. "
