What Else Would You Like To See Offered At Maine’s Hermon Mountain? The New Owners Are Looking For Ideas!

Since the late 1980s, one of Eastern Maine's favorite places for outdoor fun, Hermon Mountain, has been run by Bill and Marlene Whitcomb and their family.

While it was originally just mostly trails and the lodge, the family completely overhauled the site in 2003, when they added a ski lift and built a new lodge on the mountain.

In May of 2022 the family made the decision to put Hermon Mountain up for sale, but wanted to make sure whomever decided to come in and buy it would be the right fit for the region, committed to continue on with the legacy and heart, but also folks who had the energy to take the mountain to the next level.

Mid-December of 2025, the Whitcomb family said some buyers with local ties to the area started working on a deal to buy the mountain, and it went under contract. 

For years Hermon Mountain started making snow in October and went through right to the end season, which typically doesn't stop until March. The Whitcomb family says the new owners are looking for a way to make the mountain a year-round destination for folks, not just a wintertime facility.

And as they get ready to hand the reins of their beloved mountain over to new ownership, they're asking the community to weigh in on what it would like to see happen to this important part of the region.

They took to social media, posting an update and asking for suggestions via the Hermon Mountain Ski Area's Facebook Page. 

"As we look ahead, our vision is to build on the strong foundation already here while expanding Hermon Mountain into a true four-season destination. In addition to winter operations, they're planning to introduce new opportunities for weddings, private events, corporate gatherings, and community celebrations, taking advantage of the mountain’s unique views and welcoming atmosphere. We are also exploring the addition of disc golf and other outdoor activities that make the mountain an enjoyable place to visit well beyond ski season. What else would you like to see here?"

The community responded with some great ideas. Many folks would like to see a restaurant and/or brewery built up on Hermon Mountain.

Several people mentioned that they'd like to see some mountain biking courses and some snowmobile trails would be a great addition. One person wrote:

"I’m convinced Mtn biking would do quite well, with having a major college close by, also snowmobilers are silly and will pay a lotta money to get one last blast in! (It’s me, im snowmobilers…) Hurray for the fun continuing @ Hermon mountain!"

Others had the suggestion that maybe some outdoor rental options for the summer would work well. Another individual added:

"Snow shoe rentals as well as summer rentals for kayaks or paddle boats plus life jackets for folks to use over at the pond?"

And there were a number of people who would love to have some options for disc-golf and maybe even an outdoor event venue on the mountain.

Someone offered this suggestion:

"Disc golf seems to be very popular, maybe small concerts, wine tasting events, may day family fun day, Could do hiking trails in the summer, fall leaf peeping on ski lift, bunny hill slip n slide race? So glad the space is being continued. Holds so many memories."

The Whitcomb family says they already have plans to expand their food offerings a bit before they hand over the keys, stating that they hope to offer some fresh items like pizzas, doughboys, sandwiches and easy take out to their options.

Right now, they're offering tubing at Hermon Mountain, through February Vacation.

"We will be open for skiing, snowboarding and tubing Monday 2/16 thru Friday 2/20 from 9-4 everyday."
