Local Pet Pros Remind Mainers To Keep Pets In Mind When Spoiling Loved Ones This Valentine’s Day
Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and while many are making the mad dash around town to find just the right gift to give to their special someone, local pet pros say don't forget to consider your furry loved ones this holiday season, as well.
They're not saying to get your cat or dog a gift necessarily, but rather how the gift you get your sweetheart might not be the safest for your four-legged friends.

According to the Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Holden, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind when picking out a Valentine's Day treat this year, especially when it comes to the sweet stuff.
"Sugar-free chocolate/gum/candy with xylitol can be deadly to dogs. ( more so than cats)...Dark chocolate can be deadly to both cats and dogs...and THC candy/edibles, etc., especially in dark chocolate, is a double whammy. If you don't want to end the date at EMEVC, keep those away from pets."
They also say to be mindful about flowers if you plan to purchase some to give to your significant others.

According to the experts, some flowers can actually be toxic to your dogs or cats, like lilies, hyacinths, and tulips.
While very nice gestures of love and affection, maybe skip the sweets and flowers this year, or at least keep them out of reach of your pets.

Better yet, if you've got an animal lover that you're sweet on, consider donating, in their name, to your local animal shelter or humane society. That's a treat everyone, including Fifi and Fido, can get behind this Valentine's Day.
