A Holiday Tradition In Eastern Maine: The Robinson Ballet Teams Up With The BSO For ‘The Nutcracker’ In Orono
For many across Maine, attending a performance of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker, is a family tradition.
It's an excuse to get dressed up, go out and see a show, and to allow your imagination to soar, if only for a couple of hours.
This timeless tale of a special gift that comes to life in a dream full of candy, color, culture, and creativity has a little bit of something for everyone.
There's drama and romance. There's comedy and magical dance numbers. And all of it is set to that unmistakable music of Tchaikovsky.
While she's not entirely sure of the exact number, Bangor-based Robinson Ballet's Artistic Director, Stevie McGary, who herself played one of the Nutcracker's lead characters, Clara, says the company has been performing the show for over 4 decades.
"Founded in 1977, Robinson Ballet has thrived on live dance performances ranging from full-length classical ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Giselle to contemporary and modern dance works created by choreographers from around Maine and beyond. Our company has grown from 13 members in 1977 to over 60 dancers in our 2025 statewide touring production of The Nutcracker. "
In 1984, Robinson Ballet Founder Ralph Robinson and then Bangor Symphony Orchestra Conductor, Werner Torkanowsky, decided to team up and combine the talents of local dancers and musicians to bring the Nutcracker to life for the families in Eastern Maine for the holiday season.
Now in its 41st season, these powerhouse performers from Robinson and the BSO will once again team up for the holidays at the Collins Center for the Arts in Orono, joined by members of the Bangor Area Youth Choirs.

BSO Executive Director Renia Shterenberg says there are three shows scheduled for this coming weekend.
“This time-honored tradition is fun for the entire family...Collaborating with local ballet and choir and having a full, live symphony orchestra in the pit makes this an extra-special event. The talent that is right here in our hometown is amazing! If you’re looking for a little holiday cheer, this is definitely the event to attend!”
GRAMMY-winning conductor and BSO Musical Director, Lucas Richman, will be leading the music, while local dancers from across Eastern Maine represent the Robinson Ballet Company in performances on Saturday, December 20th at 2 PM and 7 PM, and a matinee show on Sunday, December 21st at 3 PM.
