Hurricane Paulette Creates High Surf Advisory For Coastal Maine

Surf's up.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for the coastal areas of both Hancock and Washington Counties beginning at noon today and then continuing throughout the day Tuesday, until 6 p.m.

Hurricane Paulette is now churning over Bermuda this morning with estimated winds of 80 mph all the while creating southeast swells which are now heading in New England's direction.  The swells from Hurricane Paulette will generate 4 to 6 foot waves throughout the next day and a half for Maine's south-southeast facing shoreline.  Places like Schoodic Point off Winter Harbor, will experience the 4 to 6 foot waves.

After crossing over Bermuda, Hurricane Paulette will turn northeast and head in that direction far away from the eastern shoreline of New England.

Within the High Surf Advisory, the National Weather Service warns us that "high dangerous surf and strong rip currents will make for hazardous surf conditions.  Large waves can present a danger to people on large rocks above the water. Stay away from rock outcrops along the shoreline exposed to open waves, as waves can easily sweep people into the cold ocean water."

Those that have lived in coastal Maine can remember that over the years more than one person has been swept off the rocks from Schoodic Point and has drowned within the pounding surf, so be very careful while doing any sightseeing over the next day or two along the state's rocky shoreline.
