Early Morning Accident Traps Man Inside Vehicle, Slows Commute On Interstate By Waterville Wednesday

The morning commute on Interstate 95 near Waterville was slowed to one lane Wednesday morning following an early morning crash in that area.

Shannon Moss with the Maine Department of Public Safety says first responders were sent to the scene of a crash on the northbound lane of I-95 by mile marker 131 just after 5:30 AM.

Maine State Police issued a traffic warning to motorists in the area to slow down and approach the area with caution.

When they arrived, Moss says emergency crews found one person trapped in a vehicle.

"Preliminary details of the scene indicate a vehicle driven by 41-year-old Raymond Fenderson of Brunswick, was merging onto I-95 northbound off of the mile marker 130 on ramp from Waterville when Fenderson collided with a motorist who was traveling northbound on I-95. Fenderson’s vehicle crashed head-on into the guardrail on the median side and Fenderson became entrapped in the vehicle."

Fenderson was finally freed after about half-an-hour. First responders from Waterville Fire and Rescue were able to get the man to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Thankfully no one else involved was injured.

While the crash is still under investigation, authorities believe 'impairment' played a big role in the incident.

Traffic remained down to one lane while emergency crews removed debris from the road, and safely removed the vehicles from the scene.

Both lanes were back up and running by Wednesday afternoon.
