Instead Of Tossing Broken Items, Orono Wants To Help You Fix Them

As part of "Maine Recycles Week" the town of Orono is offering residents opportunities to donate or recycle used items like clothing, furniture and appliances to organizations like Kiwanis and the Orono Thrift Shop.

But what about items that might be broken, you ask?

Well, they have a plan for those, too. They want to help you fix them!

According to the town's website, Orono.org, there will be a "Virtual Fixit Clinic" taking place via Zoom, on Saturday, November 20, starting at 1 PM.

"Present your broken item to a global team of expert community repairers and get suggestions for things to try. After all items have been presented, items/participants and repairers move to Zoom breakout rooms to implement the tips and, hopefully, fix the items!"

The website says the event will be facilitated by Fixit Clinic: "Fixit Clinic conveys basic disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair skills using peoples' own broken things as the vehicle. By sharing these skills while transferring them to others we teach critical thinking through the lens of our relationship to consumption and sustainability. We strive to demystify science and technology so that we can ultimately make better policy choices as a society."
