As you saw from the list, Maine has several spooky legends involving tragic deaths, unexplained disappearances, and spirits that supposedly still haunt the places where these events occurred. One tale involves a lighthouse on a 35-acre island about a mile offshore, where a young man reportedly shot and killed his landlord during a confrontation involving a rifle. Overcome with grief and remorse, the young man took his own life later that night, and legend says his spirit still haunts the lighthouse. In Randolph, near Gardiner, the Old Narrow Gauge trail is rumored to be haunted by a man who disappeared while riding his bicycle. Neither his body nor his bike was ever found, and visitors reportedly experience strange orbs, see spirits, and hear frightening screams telling them to leave. Another famous legend comes from Bucksport, where town founder Colonel Jonathan Buck allegedly had a woman burned as a witch after refusing to provide financial support for their son. Before her death, the woman's son reportedly retrieved one of her legs and buried it as a memorial. After Buck died, a stain resembling a leg supposedly appeared on his tombstone and remained even after the stone was replaced. Each story blends Maine history with tragedy, mystery, and supernatural folklore, keeping these eerie legends alive for locals and paranormal enthusiasts.
