A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition following a near-drowning incident at a hotel pool in Kennebunk over the weekend.

According to Kennebunk Fire Rescue, emergency crews were called to the Hampton Inn on Saturday night at around 9:30 p.m. for a report of someone not breathing.

When first responders arrived at the hotel, they say they found a 4-year-old girl in cardiac arrest after what officials described as an apparent near-drowning in the pool.

WGME reported that firefighters and emergency medical crews immediately began treating the child at the scene. Due to the seriousness of the situation, the girl was flown by medical helicopter to a Portland hospital for advanced medical care.

Officials say she remains in critical condition.

At this time, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Officials have not released additional information about how the child ended up in distress in the pool, whether anyone else was in the area at the time, or how long she may have been underwater.

Kennebunk Fire Rescue has not announced any further details about the investigation.

The incident is a devastating reminder of how quickly water-related emergencies can happen, especially with young children. Safety experts have long urged parents and caregivers to keep close, constant supervision around pools, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water.

Even in places that may feel controlled or familiar, like hotel pools, emergencies can unfold in a matter of seconds.

More information is expected to be released if and when officials provide an update.
