A Bangor, Maine, man allegedly damaged the outside of a downtown business with a hammer.

Bangor, Maine Police Arrest an Unhoused Man for Causing Damage With a Hammer

Matthew Bowden, 46, was arrested on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Officials say Bowden is unhoused.

Bangor Police Officers responded to a downtown business on Main Street just after 4 am on Wednesday after receiving a report of a man allegedly using a hammer to destroy a pillar outside a business.

Officials did not identify which Downtown Bangor business was damaged.

Officers went to the Main Street location, allegedly saw Bowden engaged in the activity, and noted that a large amount of granite had already been removed.

Further investigation revealed that granite from the building's door frame had also been damaged.

Bangor, Maine, Man Faces Multiple Charges After Hammer Attack on Local Business

Mr. Bowden was arrested and charged with:

  • Criminal mischief
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Violation of conditions of release.

He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail.
