Think Bangor Is the Snowiest City in Maine? Think Again!
Despite being known as the "Queen City of the East," it turns out that Bangor doesn't wear the crown for the snowiest city in Maine.
Redfin recently compiled a list ranking the top 10 snowiest cities in the U.S., focusing on those with a population of 75,000 or more. Now, Bangor, with just over 30,000 residents, doesn't quite make the cut, but until another list comes out, this is the information we've got.
To determine the rankings, Redfin considered cities with the highest average seasonal snowfall. Some cities might experience more days with measurable snowfall but have lower average totals, and these were excluded. It's also important to note that the list concentrated on the highest seasonal snowfall totals, not annual ones.
Portland, Maine's largest city, snagged the #10 spot on the list with an average seasonal snowfall of 68.7 inches and a record seasonal snowfall of 141.5 inches.
For comparison, Syracuse, NY holds the title for the snowiest city in the U.S. It is also known for being the rainiest and one of the cloudiest cities in the country. Syracuse experiences an average seasonal snowfall of 127.8 inches, with a record seasonal snowfall reaching 192.1 inches.
It's no surprise to us Mainers that Portland sees plenty of snow, especially from nor'easters. Despite being on the coast, the city's northern location keeps temperatures low enough for substantial snowfall, surpassing cities like Boston or Nashua, NH.
Now, the competition is on. This year, we'll be keeping a close eye on the snowfall inches, watching the battle unfold between Bangor and Portland for the title of the highest seasonal snowfall totals.
And, I must admit, I'm secretly rooting for Portland to outdo Bangor in this snowy showdown.
