Maine State Police have arrested a Winslow man for the murder of his girlfriend in 1987.

Stephen Bouchard, 63, of Winslow, was arrested on Friday, May 8, 2026, for the murder of Alice Hawkes.

Bouchard was Hawkes' live-in boyfriend at the time of her death.

Maine State Police say that on October 10, 1987, the young woman was found deceased in the apartment they shared.

Bouchard told the police that he had gone to town to take care of some errands, found that he was locked out of the apartment, and called the landlord to help.

When they entered the residence, they found Hawkes deceased in the apartment.

He also said he had called Hawkes earlier to advise her that he had locked himself out of his car.

That was the last time anyone heard from her.

Alice's death was ruled a homicide and an investigation was launched but, as the years, passed, the case went cold.

Maine Attorney General Charges Winslow Man with Murder for 1987 Cold Case

In 2025, the Major Crimes Unit-Unsolved initiated a full investigation which led to a decision by the Maine Attorney General's Office to seek a murder charge against Stephen Bouchard.

He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail.
