Initial Indications Suggest the Truck Was Unable to Stop in Time

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says Tapley was traveling southbound on Route 11 just after 1:00 on Wednesday afternoon when his tractor trailer collided with a train at the crossing. Officials say an initial investigation suggests that the truck, which was hauling wood chips, was unable to stop in time, and struck the train, causing it to derail. The train operator wasn't hurt in the crash.

There's no word about why Tapley wasn't able to stop in time or whether the railroad crossing's gate/Alert system was functioning properly.
