Maine Residents Have Left Behind Thousands in Unclaimed Property
Unclaimed property is defined as financial property that the owner left behind.
This could be insurance settlements that weren't issued until a person moved to a new address, or bank accounts that earned interest after the owner had moved on.
Since the money has been left behind, it's stored on the state's unclaimed property list, which is currently valued at over $383,000.
Maine Treasurer is Sending Unclaimed Property Checks to Eligible Recipients
In the past, people had to search for their name, something they can still do on the state's unclaimed property list.
But this year, State Treasurer Joe Perry decided to do something different by sending as much of that unclaimed financial property to its rightful owners as possible.
So Perry worked with the Maine Revenue Service to find the correct address for each recipient.
Starting this week, they're sending out checks to those people in the amount they left behind.
Maine Unclaimed Property Checks Will Start Being Mailed in Late June
The checks that will start going out this week range in amounts from $10 to $5,000.
I often check the list to see if I have any unclaimed property, but even though I nearly always see my name, the funds never actually belong to me.
Pay attention not only to the name, but also to the address on the entry.
The Treasurer says Maine residents should start receiving checks as early as Thursday, June 25, 2026.
