The 2026 Maine gubernatorial candidate hoping to succeed Janet Mills has shared his thoughts on the current Hantavirus situation.
The former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is currently running in Maine’s Democratic primary for governor this June, hoping to earn the party’s nomination heading into the general election in November.

As shared on his social media pages on Wednesday, May 6th, Nirav Shah, who became a familiar face to many Mainers during the Coronavirus pandemic, posted a video sharing his thoughts on the current Hantavirus outbreak.
In the video, Shah discussed the situation and offered his perspective on the growing concerns surrounding the virus.

Shah said in his latest video that the Hantavirus outbreak connected to a cruise ship in the Atlantic does not appear likely to become a global pandemic.
The video also stressed the importance of public health preparedness and response systems. It additionally criticized Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration, arguing that strong leadership and investment in public health infrastructure remain critical during outbreaks like this one.
