I drive between Bangor and Brewer every single day, and I can tell you it's been a huge pain in the rear end for the past several months!

You probably don't need a reminder that the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge has been a bit of a headache. The ongoing construction has meant getting used to one-way traffic, extra patience, and a little more time behind the wheel.

It's been especially frustrating for me, since I have to drive out of my way to get to work at 5 a.m. But there's finally some progress to talk about, and drivers are probably wondering the same thing: When will we be able to cross the bridge in both directions again?

The preservation project began June 1, 2026, with traffic restrictions starting June 8. The work has included replacing the bridge's pavement and expansion joints.

According to the Maine Department of Transportation, the main work is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks. And judging by the photo I snapped while walking across the bridge, they're getting pretty close to finally finishing things up!

Both sides of the bridge have been paved, but traffic is still limited to one westbound lane from Brewer into Bangor, with workers reportedly still addressing expansion plates on the Bangor side.

November 25 Is a Date to Watch

MaineDOT's construction documents list November 25, 2026, as the project's contract completion date. That would be a pretty nice Thanksgiving treat!

That's certainly encouraging news for anyone who's tired of the traffic restrictions. However, November 25 is a contractual deadline, not a confirmed reopening date. MaineDOT has not officially announced when two-way traffic will return.

Additional bridge work is also planned in the area, including work on the nearby Penobscot River Bridge in 2027.

For now, we'll keep our fingers crossed that Bangor and Brewer drivers get our familiar two-way commute back soon. I know I'd certainly appreciate it!
