New Bangor YMCA Takes Shape as Construction Moves Forward

Exciting changes are coming to Bangor, and with construction already well underway, it’s so cool to see the new YMCA beginning to take shape!

The Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA officially broke ground on its new Main Street location back in October of 2025, and now, things are really picking up.

I recently took a walk down Main Street on a hot summer afternoon and passed right by the new construction site. Even though the project is still a work in progress, it’s already easy to picture what an incredible addition this will be to the city.

Last year, the Bangor Region Y gave community leaders and stakeholders a look at what’s to come, unveiling a video that showcases the vision for the new facility. The presentation took place in a movie theater-like setting at Hollywood Casino.

The new YMCA is named in honor of Cathy Gero, a longtime member and supporter of the Bangor Region Y who passed away in 2022 after a four-year battle with cancer.

And this new facility is going to be big.

Here’s a look at what’s planned for the new Bangor Region YMCA:

The Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA will sit on a 7-acre site on Main Street in Bangor, near Davis Court and Talbot Park.
The new facility will be approximately 82,000 square feet — nearly twice the size of the current 45,000-square-foot YMCA on Second Street.
It will feature state-of-the-art facilities, bringing many of the programs people already love at the current YMCA while adding plenty of new options.
A full-court gymnasium and run/walk track will be added, giving the community amenities that aren't currently available at the Second Street location.
The new aquatic center will include two pools: an 8-lane competition lap pool and a 6-lane family, instructional and therapeutic pool.
A Community Health Center will provide access to mental health specialists, a primary care provider, physical therapy and other services.
The facility will also include a community room, community kitchen and café, creating additional spaces designed to promote connection and well-being for people of all ages.
A new teen center will serve middle and high school students, with the space available for multigenerational use outside of teen center hours.
Plans also call for recreational and sports fields, along with nature-based outdoor education and play areas.

If everything stays on schedule, the new Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA is expected to open its doors in spring 2027.

That may sound like a ways off, but seeing the construction progress makes the project feel very real.
