Salt North Taproom, located at 16 Union Street in Bangor, is closed for good, according to the building's owner.

As of today, there is a padlock on the front door.

Mark Greenleaf was the owner of Carolina's Sports & Spirits for over 20 years, but in May of 2025, he stepped down, selling the business to a new owner.

The location has been a nightlife destination for years. It was previously open as "The Waterfront" and "Legends" before Greenleaf took control.

On May 23rd of last year, Salt North Taproom opened, with Dane Morgan taking over the reins. The nightspot featured soul food cooked meats, such as jerk chicken, creative craft cocktails, and an outdoor beer garden, and that will featured live entertainment.

Over the past several months, the establishment has had a fair share of controversy. Salt North was ordered by a court to pay a former head chef more than $135,000 after a dispute over unpaid wages.

The chef said he often wasn’t paid properly while working there, with paychecks coming late or not matching the hours he actually worked. He ended up taking legal action earlier this year, but the restaurant’s owner didn’t respond to the lawsuit or show up in court, so the judge ruled in the chef’s favor.

Other former employees also raised similar concerns, saying there were ongoing issues with things like missed overtime pay and sloppy payroll records.

Our attempts to contact Salt North Taproom management were unsuccessful.

Greenleaf said he plans to rebrand the business as a catering and event center, named MJ's, in addition to the new business.

Greenleaf said he hopes to be open to the public before every Bangor Waterfront show, bringing a buffet-style menu for a fast and easy meal, so concertgoers can get in and out quickly before each event.
