Maine Is One of Just 3 States Without This Popular Restaurant

This one might surprise you!

There are plenty of fast-food chains with locations throughout the United States, but for some odd reason, one popular chain has zero locations in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

If you watch much television, chances are you’ve been bombarded with commercials for Sonic. Nothing unusual there, but I have to admit, sometimes the food they’re peddling looks pretty damn good.

Every time I drive to Boston, I see them, and I can’t help but wonder what all the hype is about.

Sonic Drive-In is a fast-food chain known for burgers, hot dogs, onion rings, tater tots, and ice cream treats.

The chain is especially known for its carhop service, where your food is brought directly to your car, along with its huge selection of customizable drinks and signature crushed ice. Sonic's slogan is "Service at the Speed of Sound."

Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont are the only three states without a Sonic Drive-In location. As of February 2026, Sonic was the largest drive-in restaurant chain in the United States, with more than 3,300 locations across 47 states.

Texas alone has nearly 1,000 Sonic locations. That's kind of crazy when you think about it—we don't have a single one here in Maine.

And this isn't exactly a new development.

Way back in 2013, a Sonic representative said New Hampshire was part of the company's future plans and that they were looking for the right location and franchise partner.

Well, here we are 13 years later, and...zip, zilch, zero.

So, for the sake of argument, let's say you really are craving Sonic. Where would you have to go?

The nearest locations are in Massachusetts, which has four: Peabody, Somerset, Springfield, and Stoughton.

That's not exactly a quick drive just to satisfy a craving for a Sonic burger and some tots.
