Every year, US News and World Report releases their report on what they have determined to be the best high schools in the country. They also release lists of the best high schools in each state.

This year's list for Maine is out, and the schools at the top all have something in common that gets them there.

The criteria used for ranking the best high schools in Maine take data from six categories to compile the list:

  • College Readiness 30%
This is the number of seniors who earned a qualifying score on at least one Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam.
  • State Assessment Proficiency 20%
  • State Assessment Performance 20%
  • Underserved Student Performance 10%
Scores on state assessments among students who are Black, Hispanic, and from low-income households.
  • College Curriculum Breadth 10%
The number of seniors who took and earned a qualifying score on AP and IB exams in multiple areas.
  • Graduation Rate 10%

We've put together the top 25 schools in Maine, according to the report, and found that the ones at the top are in the more wealthy towns and cities in Maine. Higher amounts of taxes mean the schools have more money to provide the kids in town with a good education. It's unfortunate it's this way, but it is what it is.

Take a look and see if your kids' high school made the list of the top 25 best schools in Maine.
