Dogs. Man’s best friend. Our four-legged companions. The lovable, tail-wagging bundles of joy that somehow manage to make life infinitely better just by being around. A gift from the gods that we truly don't deserve.

If you're a dog lover, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Their loyalty is unmatched, their affection is endless, and their ability to brighten even the worst day is downright remarkable. Whether they're protecting the family, playing fetch, or simply curling up next to you on the couch, dogs have a special way of making everything better. Dogs are about as close to perfection as it gets.

How Can Dogs Positively Affect Your Health?

They can even help improve your health. According to the American Kennel Club, dogs can lower stress, improve heart health, promote a more active lifestyle, reduce loneliness, and even lessen the threat of allergies.

As you can probably tell, I’ve been a dog owner my entire life, and for me, it’s rescue dogs all the way! But that doesn’t mean I don’t have a soft spot for every breed out there.

With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to do a little research to figure out the most popular dog breed in Maine. Thankfully, the fine folks over at House Sitter have already done the heavy lifting. The site analyzed every house-sitting request it has received to determine the most popular breed in each state.

What is the Most Popular Dog Breed in Maine?

As for Maine, according to House Sitter, a true classic came in at number one: the venerable golden retriever.

The golden retriever is the ultimate family dog. Goldens are easy to train, gentle with children, good with other pets, and always up for a walk. Sure, keeping them clean can be a chore, but they more than make up for it with their affectionate nature and goofball charm. They also make amazing service and working dogs. Quite frankly, they are pretty damn perfect.

Seriously, who doesn't love a goldie? Every single one I have ever met has been mild-mannered, sweet, and just about perfect. While I have never owned one, I would certainly rescue one if I ever had the chance. Honestly, I'd love to see it try to corral our cats. That would be quite enjoyable to watch.

Maine was not alone in its love of goldies. Seven other states had the popular dog listed at number one, including one other New England state, Vermont. I always liked those Green Mountain folks.

While eight states is a solid number for the goldie, it pales in comparison to the most popular dog breed overall, the Labrador retriever, which led the way in a whopping 28 states. Very impressive indeed.
