The grocery store battle in Maine is about to heat up a little more.

After nearly a year of anticipation, Aldi is nearly ready for the grand opening of their first location in the state. at the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland, Maine.

Aldi is in the final stages of construction and hiring staff with plans to have a grand opening sometime in February.

But for those wondering if Aldi was going to open in Portland and forget about the rest of the state like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, there's some breadcrumbs to suggest that isn't their plan at all.

Aldi Planning Monster Expansion Which Could Include More Maine Stores

The Portland, Maine, Aldi location will be 1 of 180 new stores the German grocery chain opens in 2026. But they don't plan to stop there.

According to Supermarket News, Aldi has ambitious plans to become one of the preeminent grocery chains in America over the next several years.

Aldi plans to open an additional 400 new locations by the end of 2028, hoping to swallow up market share in some of its newer markets. That will likely include Maine.

Distribution Centers Will Be Key to Any Further Maine Expansion

Along with opening 180 new stores in 2026, Aldi is opening three additional distribution centers.

The company will need to add more distribution centers in the northeast if further expansion into Maine is planned.

A location in the Saco/Biddeford area seems the likeliest next expansion but there would be room and demand for Aldi in places like Augusta and Lewiston.
