Authorities in East Millinocket are investigating an incident that happened just before 5 PM on Thursday. Police say that emergency personnel were called to the area of Central Street, near Congress, for a crash involving a vehicle and a child.

"Millinocket Fire Department personnel arrived on scene almost immediately and rendered emergency medical aid to a male juvenile who had been struck by a vehicle. An off-duty Nurse was also rendering aid to the patient upon the arrival of Fire & EMS crews. The juvenile was transported to Millinocket Regional Hospital and was later transferred by Lifeflight of Maine to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with serious injuries."

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office 'Accident Reconstruction Team' was called in to help local law enforcement, while the Millinocket Public Works Department aided in closing off the scene.

And because of the crash reconstruction, authorities had to shut parts of Central Street down for a period of time, Thursday.

Members of the Maine Warden Service and law enforcement agents with Baxter State Park also helped.

Authorities say they believe, based on their investigation and witnesses who saw the incident unfold, that the child was attempting to cross the street in a place where there was no crosswalk. They are, however, still investigating the situation.

They say the collision had nothing to do with the speed the vehicle was traveling at or alcohol consumption.
