I was so glad to see this today because when my hubby and I were walking in Orono the other day I saw one with just the tips black and the rest brown.

Now my mom always told me that the brown indicated bare ground during the winter. From the comments you can see that the folklore that goes with these little guys has gotten a bit confused so I turned to my friends at the Farmers Almanac says this about our woolly little Mainers.

Folklore says that if the rusty brown band is wide (more segments), then it will be a mild winter. The more black there is, the more severe the winter.

So I don't know how you feel about a prognosticating caterpillar but if he/she is right I'm good with it.

Want to learn more about the little guys.
