Survey Unveils Mainers as Absolute Halloween Costume Masters

It's been years since I dressed up.

I have nothing against Halloween, but I'm not necessarily the most willing participant. In part, because I don't have that kind of creative brain. My wife, on the other hand, has an entire trunk of things that she uses and alters and redesigns year-to-year for all her costumes. She takes it super seriously.

In fact, I think the last time I really dressed up, it was a costume she made for me anyway. She made me a full-size, grownup Crown Royal bag. I could slip it right over my head and enjoy my life as a bottle of Crown that day. But generally, come Halloween, you're just gonna find me hunkered down in front of the candy bowl, and that's about it.

Turns out, Mainers are among the most creative anywhere.

Now, by creative, I don't mean that you had the hilarious idea to head to the costume store and pick up a sexy police officer outfit. I mean that you decided to do something that doesn't really exist, and went out of your way to put days to weeks of effort into finding all the pieces you needed to make it happen.

But it's true that Mainers, are among the Top 5 for most creative DIY costumes. Ohio, Utah, Kentucky, and Mississippi are the only states above us. And it's not actually just costumes, our DIY decorations are also Top 5 worthy. So we definitely know what it means to embrace the spirit of the holiday and go with it.

However, the most DIY'd costume in Maine isn't what you'd think...

Now, I wasn't so naive to think that Mainers are just building their own lobster costumes. That'd be too obvious. But I never would've guessed that the most popular DIY costume Mainers have been putting together is a Barbie costume. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just wouldn't have expected that one.

Right behind Barbie, was the ultimate anti-Barbie. In other New England states, everybody seems to want to be Velma from Scooby Doo. Go figure... Except Rhode Island. They all wanna be cowboys and cowgirls. Rhode Island... Huh. Hey, there's no rules for Halloween. It's really your time to be whatever you want. Even a cowboy.
