Is it possible that we're really that polite?

Certainly not behind the wheel of a car... But that's a whole separate story. I suppose you could also argue that people who live in tourist towns, but don't work in the tourism industry are also not that polite. But that's ok. Like a new study shows, we're among the most polite. Not necessarily the most.

But generally speaking, I think it's true. If there's one thing Mainers are pretty good at, it's letting people know what they appreciate about them. Or rather, we're pretty good about appreciating what people do for us, etc. And apparently, there's some science to back it all up. Ok, maybe science is a strong word. How about data?

See, we're only mostly polite. There's plenty of room there for the more grizzled Mainers among us to enjoy living their Eeyore ways. Not everyone can be a Pooh or a Piglet. But overall, we let people know they're awesome, and we do it often. According to this study, Mainers thank people almost 200 times a year.

33% of Mainers said they thanked someone today. Sure, maybe they said it with a sarcastic grin when you took the only shopping cart without a crooked and squeaky wheel, but it was still a thank you. 96% said they thanked someone this month. Those two numbers seem kind of far apart, but I'd thank someone instantly for doing all this math.

What about other states? Who could possibly thank more than us??

Idaho takes the top spot. But I also think everyone in Idaho is probably a liar. They say almost 60% thanked someone today, and they did it 100% in the last month. Bull crap, you lying Idahoans. Not to mention, they only say it once more a year then we do. I feel like there's a conspiracy to topple us from the top spot.

Vermont and Connecticut were in the Top 20 as well. I believe it about Vermont, but I've seen the way Connecticut people drive. They should be a lot more thankful. Everyday they don't get in a car accident is pure kismet. But of course, I just want to thank you for joining me in this whole idea we're thankful. It's very nice of you.
