Do any gardening over the weekend? Lots of us are nodding our heads.

Whole lotta planting going on as May comes to its close.

Potatoes are the most popular vegetable in Maine, and for that matter in lots of states. But lots don’t grow potatoes in their home gardens, they leave potatoes to the experts.

Okay, we leave potatoes for the farmers in the County.

So, what do you think is the most popular vegetable we grow in our backyard gardens in Maine?

Hint, it’s not tomatoes.

Nothing like a fresh tomato right out of the garden. But when they ripen, they do it in multi-dozens at the same time.

What am I going to do with all these tomatoes?

Based on google searches the most popular vegetable to grow in Maine is cucumbers.

The answer isn’t just to dig. Plant. Water. Harvest.

Are you growing cucumbers this year?  Here is what you’re supposed to know.

If you want to save space in your garden and yield higher quality cucumbers that are less prone to disease, trellis cucumbers rather than letting them vine along the soil. Use a cattle panel mounted on T-posts or rebar to create a cheap, simple trellis. Then, plant cucumbers about 12” apart and allow them to vine up the panel. Prune off the suckers to promote more fruit growth and keep plenty of airflow between foliage.

Other vegetables searched for growing tips are beets, various varieties of lettuces, carrots, and onions.

Grow what you’re going to grow, and months from now may your harvest and your joy be bountiful.
