Think You Know Maine? Try Naming All 16 Counties Without Google
There was a time when Maine kids just knew this...
When I was in junior high and high school, the internet as we know it, didn't really exist. The closest thing to the internet was the movie War Games. It was just a weird thing you did on the phone to hack into some government main frame. I just made up that term, probably. I don't really know squat about computers.

But I remember vividly, having to memorize all 16 of Maine's counties. It was in Social Studies class with Mr. Frace. But the cool part was, like most things in the 80's, he gave us a little life-hack to remember the counties. It wasn't a mnemonic device per se, but an actual little song to remember them all. To this day, I can sing it.
Could you name all the counties without internet help?
These days, who cares... The internet takes care of everything we ever need to know. In some ways, you could argue it's made us lazy. We don't commit things to memory the way we used to. I actually thank those days for that, because my brain is absolutely chock full of the world's most useless information.
Most people can name a few of the counties adjacent to theirs, but I've found that a lot of folks can't name all of them. There are ones that I wouldn't necessarily describe as obscure, but there's a lot more activity in counties like Cumberland or Penobscot, as opposed to Knox or Lincoln Counties. Not to say those places aren't awesome...

Then there's also the confusion of towns that share the same names as some of our counties. That does make it a little harder to remember which is which. It's like you have to be some sort of super genius. But, there's always the song. So learn this little ditty right here, and become a Maine county expert.
