How can this be true?

I've lived in Maine all my life, and I've had the crap scared out of me more times than I can count. I'm not talking about being afraid to walk down the streets of Maine's big cities at night, I'm talking about having the crap scared out of you for reasons you can't quite articulate.

Think about how many dark back roads we have in Maine. Think of all the nightmare-producing cemeteries we have around the state. For criminy's sake, the master of horror himself, Stephen King, is from here. So how is it on the national stage, we're not one of the apex states for being scary?

Maine ranks almost all the way at the bottom for scary states.

Ranker.com put out a list of the scariest states in the US, but not in terms of crime or that sort of thing. Just places that creeped you out to a maximum degree. Maine was way down at #34. I suppose it won't come as a total shock that Florida came in at #1. That place just gives me the creeps just saying its name. Maybe it's the roaches?

New England in general did ok. New Hampshire was #45 and Rhode Island was almost all the way at the bottom at #47, and Connecticut at #48. But I guess there's no shock that Vermont was at #50. Literally the least scariest state in the country. Boston must've pushed Massachusetts all the way up to #23.

You'd think when it just comes to full-on scare factor, New England in general would be a bit higher on this list. It's one of the oldest parts of our society, yet people just wanna talk about Florida. That's ok. Come on up and hang out a while. We'll compare notes on who's spent more time running into the night, screaming at nothing.

Sometimes what's real is the most scary of all, like these nasty bugs...
