The Maine Warden Service was among several rescue agencies that freed a Bangor man pinned between some large rocks Saturday afternoon in the Forks.

Clayford Cabilas, 30, of Bangor and his friend, Precious Magallanes, 27, of the Philippines, had finished a hike on the Mosquito Mountain Trail at about 2:45 p.m. when they decided to climb atop some large rocks to take a photo, according to authorities.

Once atop the rocks, which recently had been moved there by heavy equipment, Cabilas lost his balance and fell. The fall caused one of the rocks to shift, and Cabilas fell in between the rocks, pinning his arm and leg, according to a news release by the Maine Warden Service.

Magallanes tried to free Cabilas and repeatedly tried to reach 911, but was unable to connect because of poor cell coverage.

At 3:50 p.m., Magallanes eventually did reach 911, and rescue personnel arrived at approximately 4:15 p.m.

Crews found Cabilas pinned, with a fractured arm and leg, head injury, and becoming increasingly hypothermic. Crews used the Jaws of Life and airbags to move the rock and free Cabilas.

Cabilas was taken by helicopter to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
