A man, who Old Town police have pursued for most of the day, is now with officers and safe.

Police described the individual as a man in crisis. University of Maine Police sent out a warning this morning that a shirtless black man with a chest tattoo was being sought by officials. Police said he was suicidal and possibly had a knife. Old Town residents were encouraged to stay indoors until the man could be located.

Late morning, the man went into the river, near the site of the Old Town mill. While police lined both sides of the river and a helicopter hovered overhead, the man took refuge on a rock in the middle of the water. The next few hours involved police working out how best to reach him.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, UM updated its Facebook post about the incident, stating that it has been resolved safely. The man's identity has not been released.
