Katie Hennessy is making history, by becoming the first ever female firefighter in Waterville, Maine.

In a post to their Facebook page today, Waterville Fire & Rescue announced the newest addition to their team.

Katie is a 30 year old nurse and EMT, and soon she'll be able to add the title "firefighter."

Over the next few weeks, Katie will be conducting orientation training. After that, she'll be joining the C-Shift as a full time career firefighter.

As the father of two young daughters, I just loved seeing this story. I plan to share it with them, as proof that you really can do anything you set your mind to. Whatever it is you want to be when you grow up, you can. Even if someone says "a girl has never done that before."

A big congratulations to Katie! Thank you for being the latest in a long line of women who have overcome gender barriers. A lot of those barriers have been broken over the years, but there are still many more.

This is a big accomplishment, and inspiring for girls and women everywhere.
