A U.S. Navy Seal from Falmouth died during an operation in Somalia against a group of militants linked to Al Qaeda.

The Department of Defense announced Saturday that Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator Kyle Milliken, age 38, was killed during an operation against al-Shabaab. The maneuver took place Friday in a remote area approximately 40 miles west of Mogadishu. He's described in the media release as a U.S. Navy sailor who was supporting a Somali National Army-led operation with U.S. Africa Command.

WABI-TV reports a statement from the family describes Milliken as a 'devoted father and son, true professional, and wonderful father.' It goes on to thank the community for their interest, but asks for privacy as they deal with the loss. Senators King and Collins released a statement expressing their sadness over his death:

"He defended our nation with bravery and with distinction, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. We hope that his family and loved ones are comforted in knowing that the people of Maine and our nation are eternally grateful for his selfless service"
