Forecasters are warning of potentially significant amounts of sleet and freezing rain this weekend.

The National Weather Service is tracking what they're calling a potentially major winter storm. Northern areas of Maine are forecast to pile up most of the snow Saturday night into Sunday. The Bangor and Downeast areas could see "significant sleet and ice accumulations," according to forecasters.

A winter storm watch has been issued for much of northern and eastern Maine for Saturday night and Sunday.

Forecasters are warning of hazardous travel conditions Sunday, as ice accumulations are expected to reach half an inch or more in the Bangor area.

Power companies are preparing to address any outages related to the storm.

“We anticipate a range of precipitation across our service territory beginning Saturday night, and we will continue following the weather forecast closely over the weekend to ensure we have the right resources in place,” said Allison Doughty, Emera Maine storm manager. “We urge the public to stay safe by preparing for the possibility of power outages as well as difficult travel conditions.”
