State Relief Checks Being Sent to Mainers Starting this Week
State issued relief checks will be in mailboxes starting this week.
Relief checks are starting to roll out. The checks for $850 will be sent to about 858,000 eligible Maine taxpayers. Gov. Janet Mills announced the first round of checks, 5,000, will be mailed out Thursday, June 2. An estimated 200,000 checks per-week will be mailed out to qualified Mainers.
Gov. Mills said, "Through hard work, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents came together to do what is right for Maine people, and, today, I am proud to say that help is on the way. I hope that this will provide at least a small measure of relief during these tough times.”
Those eligible include:
- Those who have an annual income of less than $75,000 if filing single, or if married and filing separately.
- Those who have an annual income of less than $112,500 if filing as head of household.
- Those who have an annual income of less than $150,000 if filing jointly.
Income will be based on the Federal Adjusted Gross Income from the filers’ tax returns.
The money comes from the supplemental budget proposal, which was announced back in February, returns half of the budget surplus back to Maine taxpayers.
