Maine has decreased the fines for speeding on the state's roads, but only up to a point.

It seems like an unusual move, to lower the fines for speeding tickets in a state that works so hard to enforce the traffic laws. But Newscentermaine.com reports the state's Violation Bureau decided to decrease speeding fines by 15 percent after realizing that our penalties are higher than in other New England states.

What this means to your wallet is a difference of about $20 if you're caught driving up to nine miles per hour over the speed limit, lowering the fine from $134 to $114. People with a heavier foot will see a difference of $30 when stopped for driving up to 19 miles per hour over the speed limit.

However, if you're driving 20 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit, there will be no change in the amount of your speeding ticket. The study showed that there are fewer people driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit in Maine than in other New England states, so the decision was made to make no changes to those fines.

Speeding fines in Maine are divided between two entities, with 94 percent of the money deposited into the general fund, while 6 percent goes to law enforcement.
