Wrong Way Turn By Truck Stops Traffic In Ellsworth During AM Commute
It was certainly one way to start or, in this case, "stop" a Monday morning.
The morning commute through Ellsworth was delayed by a little over an hour when a truck driver from out of town tried to go left in a place he shouldn't have.
According to Sgt. Chad Wilmot with the Ellsworth Police Department, folks started calling into the station about 7:25 Monday morning because traffic was at a standstill.
The driver of a 2020 Freightliner from Powers Transport LLC out of Clinton was coming out of the Maine Coast Mall area, by McDonald's, when he tried to take a left.
Anyone familiar with that area knows that's not really a good option for a regular car, let alone a big rig. But he's not from the area, so he didn't know.
When he tried to fix the situation, the truck ended up on the media, blocking all of the morning traffic. And he was STUCK on those rocks.
So Sgt. Wilmot said a wrecker had to be called in to pull the big truck free.
But to make matters even messier on this Monday, the cops had to shut down a portion of High Street to let the tractor-trailer go up the wrong way, to right itself.
Thankfully no one was hurt. But a lot of people were late for work.
Authorities say they were able to clear the scene just before 9 AM.
Needless to say, it will likely be a while before that driver lives this down. And I'm not judging; I can't steer a shopping cart, let alone a big rig like that.
Sgt. Wilmot says the police department doesn't plan on filing any charges in this incident. The drivers probably eaten enough humble pie to more than make up for the damage.
