Student life at the University of Maine system will look very different this year. UMaine has altered their 2020/2021 schedule, eliminating the Fall break and Spring break, and starting the Spring semester a week later than they usually have. Classes start on August 31st and will go till the day before Thanksgiving. Then things will transition to online for the rest of the semester.

"Residence halls will be closed for the vast majority of students at the November 25 start of the holiday with instruction and exams occurring remotely through mid-December as previously scheduled...The spring 2021 semester begins January 25 -- a week later than typical -- and eliminates the traditional week-long spring break to discourage travel away from and back to Maine.  There will be a one day break on March 24, 2021."

They have also put a travel restriction in place for UMaine clubs and organization. There will be no "university-sponsored domestic travel beyond the State of Maine unless special permission is granted for compelling circumstances." The same is true for International travel, as well. If students or staff do travel, they will need to provide either negative Covid-19 test results or a 2 week quarantine upon returning to campus.

The University has also released details on how they will deal with testing. Through a partnership with Jackson Lab, UMaine has scored 25-thousand Covid tests. They will be putting together a testing "dashboard" online, that would provide the public a summary of testing results and activity.

And testing centers will be put into place, and plans are in the works within each individual campus to deal with people who end up with positive Covid-19 test results.

"Testing centers on some campuses will be able to administer as many as 80 tests per hour and UMaine and USM have plans to provide 1,000 tests per day as students arrive on campus before the August 31 start of classes.  Testing results will be available within 48 to 72 hours.  "
