An attempted traffic stop in Kennebec County on Tuesday turned into a police chase and finally ended in an arrest. As a result, a married couple, who had managed to give authorities the slip several times already this month, were finally apprehended, authorities say.

Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss says it all began around 1:30 PM on Townhouse Road in West Gardiner. A trooper in the area allegedly spotted a familiar vehicle and recognized the man in the passenger's seat as 33-year-old Zebbie Thomas of Charleston. Thomas is wanted by several law enforcement agencies on multiple warrants and is accused of crimes like aggravated assault and felony robbery.

Moss says his wife, 34-year-old Pearl Thomas of Augusta, was in the driver's seat when the Trooper attempted to pull them over.

But when he tried to get the black Chevy Impala they were traveling in to stop, a chase allegedly broke out.

"For the safety of the public and responding personnel, the Trooper executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on West Road in West Gardiner, successfully terminating the pursuit. Both Pearl and Zebbie Thomas were taken into custody without further incident. Both are being treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and will be transported to the Kennebec County Jail upon release. "

Moss says that in addition to the original charges Zebbie was facing, the couple has also been charged with Failure to Stop, Driving to Endanger, and Eluding Authorities.
