What’s That Noise? Broadway Bridge Demolition Work Has Started
If you live anywhere in or around the area of the Broadway Interstate overpass, you may have wondered what the loud noises coming from that direction are all about.
The re-working of the bridge has been in the works since 2021, with the major portions of the renovations taking place since 2023.
Construction crews started taking down the old sections of the Broadway bridge in Bangor Sunday night. Most of the work will be taking place during the overnight hours to keep the impact to the traffic pattern in that part of town minimal.
According to the City of Bangor's Facebook Page, they will take a 3-day break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
"The portion of Broadway closest to I-95 will be closed to motorists in the evenings.
Nighttime closures are expected to last through Friday, Dec. 6. Broadway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday each week. Work will not be conducted the nights of Nov. 27, 28 or 29 in observance of Thanksgiving."
Obviously, for safety's sake, vehicles can't pass underneath the bridge while it's being demolished, so the City will set up detours to guide motorists around the area.
The City's website says there will be plenty of signage to let people know where to go.
"Motorists traveling north on Broadway will still be able to access I-95 northbound. But those seeking to access southbound I-95 should instead plan on taking Stillwater Avenue north toward the Bangor Mall. They can then get on the highway at Exit 186 to drive south. Motorists who travel south on Broadway to connect with I-95 will still be able to access southbound lanes of the highway. But for those motorists seeking to head northbound on I-95, they will need to instead take I-95 south, exit at Union Street, take a left onto Union and then an immediate left onto I-95 north."
The City says the Maine DOT is overseeing the project, while the work is being done by New England Infrastructure, Inc.
The Maine DOT says the project is slated to wrap up in 2026. You can check out the progress via webcams they have set up all along the site.
