An afternoon crash in the area known as Whites Corner in Winterport Monday afternoon left one person dead, and others injured authorities say.

Waldo County Dispatchers say the crash happened around 1:45 PM at the intersection of Monroe Road and North Road.

According to the Winterport Ambulance Service, emergency crews were called to a attend a collision between two vehicles, with reports of injuries to some of those involved in the crash. Shortly after the first call to respond came through, other emergency agencies from neighboring towns were asked to assist.

"Additional resources were requested, including LifeFlight of Maine and mutual aid ambulances from Searsport and Brooks. West Frankfort Fire Department and Village Fire Department were also dispatched to assist with scene management and patient extrication."

According to WABI TV, authorities believe the driver of an SUV heading north did not yield when they got to the intersection on the North Rd and collided with a pick-up truck on the Monroe Rd. that was heading east.

"The driver of the SUV, 50-year-old Heather Browning, was pronounced dead at the scene. A juvenile passenger in Browning’s car was transported to a hospital via LifeFlight helicopter for treatment.The driver of the pick-up, a 66-year-old man was taken to the hospital by ambulance."

Sections of the Monroe Road were closed for several hours on Monday, and drivers  advised to use either Clark or Haley Road in Winterport as detours around the scene.

Authorities are still looking into the matter. They do not believe speed or alcohol was a factor in this crash.
