ORIGINAL STORY: As it looks right now, Bangor International Airport will have a very distinguished visitor land on its runway today.

The Antonov AN-225 Mriya, an airplane with the largest wingspan ever made and the heaviest aircraft in the air is due to land around 1:05 this afternoon in Bangor, according to FlightRadar24.

If you're really interested, you may want to continue to track its estimated arrival time, as the plane appears to be moving right along. The arrival time was moved up by 30 minutes just during the time it took to write this post.

This is quite the event for any aircraft enthusiast as planes like this don't often arrive in Bangor, Maine.

The Antonov AN-225 Mriya was designed to transport equipment for the Soviet Union's space program, like rocket boosters and space shuttles. It's powered by 6 turbofan engines and has 32 wheels to carry up to 640 tons of cargo.

This massive airplane departed Antonov Airport in the Ukraine earlier today.  Antonov Airport is an international cargo airport and testing facility located in the northwestern suburb of Kiev that is owned by the makers of the aircraft itself.

We have absolutely no idea why the world's largest airplane is landing in Bangor, but it would certainly be a thrill to be sitting on the side of the Odlin Road during lunch and seeing this huge aircraft fly over your head as it begins to land on the runaway of Bangor International Airport.
