An elderly woman driving the wrong way on the interstate was killed Thursday when her car struck a bridge abutment.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says a woman in her late 70's had driven her car in the wrong lane in Brunswick Thursday night on interstate 295 for about three miles. Troopers say the car suddenly veered into the median and struck the Pleasant Street overpass bridge abutment in Brunswick. According to the Portland Press Herald, the woman was identified by police as Therese Cyr of Auburn.

Police shut down the northbound lanes at the Brunswick exit near the crash site. A Lifeflight helicopter landed in the roadway but Cyr died of her injuries before she could be taken to the hospital.

Police continue to investigate this accident.
