York Woman’s Body Recovered from Flagstaff Lake

The body of a York woman, who was lost when her canoe overturned in Flagstaff Lake, was recovered on Tuesday.

31-year-old Caitlin Giunta never resurfaced after going into the water at approximately 5:30 Saturday night. She had been crossing the lake, heading to her campsite with her boyfriend, Ned Roche, and her brother, Kyle Guinta, along with their dog when the canoe capsized due to rough lake conditions and heavy wind. The men and dog were able to make it to shore, but Caitlin never did.

A search has been underway since Saturday night, with the Maine Warden Service, Maine State Police, and Maine Marine Patrol combing the lake and shoreline. At approximately 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon, divers from the State Police/Marine Patrol dive team recovered Giunta's body about 500 feet from shore in roughly 22 feet of water.

Also aiding in the search were the Maine Forest Service, Maine Association for Search and Rescue, U.S. Border Patrol, Maine Association for Search and Rescue Dogs, New Portland Fire Department, and North Star Ambulance Service.
