Fairpoint employees picketed on Wilson Street in Brewer Thursday afternoon.

Their contract expired last month but 1,700 workers have stayed on the job, according to WABI-TV5. The union workers say they’re not giving up in their battle for a new contract, where health and retirement benefits are still the primary concern. Union members have authorized a strike, and if that happens, the company can lock out workers at any time without prior notice. However, customer service would continue.
