A Maine teenager has died in a freak accident on the beach in Toms River, New Jersey.

Toms River Police, as well as other law enforcement agencies and Emergency Medical Services personnel, were called to the beach entrance near Seaview Road just after 4:00 Tuesday afternoon. They made their way to the barrier island for a report of two teenagers who were trapped in the sand. The teens' family was visiting from Maine and had been spending the afternoon at the beach. During their visit, the brother and sister started digging a large hole in the sand with frisbees. At some point, however, the sand collapsed around them and trapped them in the hole.

Emergency crews worked for hours and were able to free the 17-year-old female. She was treated by emergency services at the scene. Her brother, 18-year-old Levy Caverley, sadly died in the collapse.

Police will now work to determine what caused the hole to collapse.
