According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, it was around 9 PM when authorities watched 45-year-old Alton Whitney, who was out of jail on bail conditions, make his way to the Dollar General in Enfield. The Sheriff's deputy who spotted him knew there was an active arrest warrant out on Whitney in connection with 3 other counts of felony theft in which he was believed to be involved.

When the deputy went to apprehend Whitney, he discovered something that would add extra charges to his rap sheet.

"During the arrest, the Deputy’s investigation led to the discovery of a significant quantity of suspected methamphetamine, totaling nearly 70 grams, in Whitney’s possession. As the investigation continued, Deputies also seized a lockbox believed to contain additional evidence. Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant for the lockbox, resulting in the seizure of additional suspected illegal drugs, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, and prescription pills."
