One of Ellsworth's most important waterways runs right underneath High Street, one of the most traveled roads in the state, all the while collecting discarded material and debris

Card Brook in Ellsworth carries things like plastic bags, returnable bottles, tires, and even grocery carts downstream and into the Union River.  Without the yearly cleanup performed by a few caring individuals, it would be much worse.

Frenchman Bay Conservancy and the City of Ellsworth will once again host the annual Card Brook cleanup, on Saturday, September 12th, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Card Brook is the small stream that runs under High Street right by Pizza Hut.  It starts somewhere up beyond the White Birches in Hancock, and eventually ends running under the Bayside Road in Ellsworth before dumping into the Union River.

Once every year, kind-hearted souls don the gloves and the boots and take to the flowing waters of the brook to collect whatever trash has ended up in there.  It's a dirty job, but rewarding.

Can you help?

If you can then you're asked to please contact Kerri Taylor at ktaylor@ellsworthmaine.gov or call 669-6615 to preregister so that organizers can plan accordingly.  Volunteers will then meet up before 9:30 that Saturday to the right of Hannaford Supermarket in the Maine Coast Mall in Ellsworth.

Remember, you'll be standing in the mud at times, so dress yourself in a good pair of boots and warm clothing.  Everything else like trash bags, face masks, hand sanitizer, snacks, and water will be provided.

Mother Nature appreciates the help.
