Northbound Lanes Of Interstate 95 Near Augusta Were Closed This Afternoon As Crews Dealt With Multiple Accidents
Update as of 4 PM Friday from the Maine State Police:
"The scene in Augusta has been cleared and the road is back open to traffic.
We're experiencing accidents in several spots today at construction zones, so we ask that everyone drive with caution through these areas to ensure everyone's safety. Stay safe!"
Maine State Police are urging folks to avoid the northbound lanes of the interstate in the Augusta area at this time, as they work to clear the scene of multiple accidents in that area.
Authorities issued a statement on Facebook at about 2:30 p.m. Friday, saying they have closed both northbound lanes for the time being, but are working to reopen them.
"I-95 going northbound in Augusta (mile marker 110-111) is completely shut down right now due to a series of accidents. We expect to be able to clear the area soon, but for the time being, please avoid the area."
That stretch of road has proven hazardous in recent months. One month ago, on September 4th, 2025, there was a fatal rollover crash on the southbound off-ramp of exit 113 in Augusta.
Maine State Police say 54-year-old Shaun McFarlin of Augusta died at the scene.

"The initial investigation indicates 54-year-old Shaun McFarlin of Augusta was driving a 2006 Ford pickup truck on the southbound off-ramp when he left the roadway, leading to a rollover crash. McFarlin was pronounced deceased on scene from injuries sustained in the crash. McFarlin was not wearing a seatbelt. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash."
The Maine Department of Transportation says that in 2025 alone, just in the area of Augusta, there have been over 700 crashes reported.

There is currently a major construction project underway along the interstate in that area as well, resulting in a work area and a reduction of speed along the highway. Crews have been working for some time now on replacing the Augusta Western Avenue Bridge, which runs along the interstate near Exit 109.
